Melba Newell Phillips

Saturday, July 13, 2013

6:30 - 8:30 pm

Hilton Portland and Executive Towers

We invite you to attend the Melba Newell Phillips Celebration Dinner to help grow the endowment.  Melba Newell Phillips was an excellent educator who developed and implemented training for physics teaching at all grade levels and led a movement to improve physics teacher preparation. Melba was the first woman president of AAPT. In 1981, AAPT presented her with the first Melba Newell Phillips Award, created in her honor "for exceptional contributions to physics education through leadership in the AAPT." Melba also received AAPT's highest honor – the Oersted Medal – placing her among Nobel laureates in her accomplishments in physics.

On Saturday, July 13, a reception will begin at 6:30 pm with dinner following a short program featuring the lifetime achievements of Melba Newell Phillips. The cost of the celebration is $180, of which $90 is tax deductible and will go to the Fund. You may purchase tickets online or if you have already registered, by writing to programs@aapt.org.

By supporting the Melba Newell Phillips Medal Endowment, you can help recognize exceptional physics educators who have provided extraordinary leadership to AAPT. If you are unable to attend the celebration, please consider contributing directly to the Endowment
