Toni Sauncy Becomes New President of AAPT

At the close of the 2022 Virtual Winter Meeting the presidential gavel was presented to Toni Sauncy. She will serve as President of the American Association of Physics Teachers for the coming year. Sauncy, Chair, Department of Physics and Harold T. Johnson Professor in Pre-Engineering at Texas Lutheran University, has previously served on the AAPT Board of Directors as President-elect and Vice President.

AAPT Participating in the AAAS SEA Change Professional Society Pilot

AAPT has been selected to be one of four participating organizations in the SEA Change initiative. Early in 2021, AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science) accepted proposals from science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) professional societies to participate in a systemic change initiative called SEA (STEMM Equity Achievement) Change. The SEA Change initiative encompasses systemic change for institutions and departments; Physics and Astronomy professional societies have been the first to pilot departmental SEA Change programs (funded by a grant from the American Institute of Physics federation Venture Fund, www.aip.org). The focus of this part of the initiative is to engage in the development and testing of a self-assessment and action planning framework aimed at making diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) the norm within such organizations.

Tengiz Bibilashvili Selected New U.S. Physics Team Academic Director

The American Association of Physics Teachers has announced that Tengiz Bibilashvili of UCSB has been selected to serve as the Academic Director of the U.S. Physics Team. He will begin immediately working with the coaches to prepare the F=MA Exam to be administered in 2022.

AAPT Announces Winter 2022 Fellow

The 2022 AAPT Fellows Awardee has been announced. The criterion for selection of Fellows is exceptional contribution to AAPT's mission, to enhance the understanding and appreciation of physics through teaching. Fellowship is a distinct honor signifying recognition by one's professional peers. Any AAPT member who has maintained an active membership for at least 7 years is eligible for nomination for Fellowship. Nominations are evaluated by the AAPT Awards committee and approved by the AAPT Board of Directors.

Cunningham Elected APS Fellow

Beth A. Cunningham of the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) has been named a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) by the APS Council of Representatives upon the recommendation of the APS Forum on Education (FEd).

Dounas-Frazer Recipient of the AAPT 2022 Homer L. Dodge Citation

AAPT has announced that Dimitri Dounas-Frazer will receive the association's Homer L. Dodge Citation for Distinguished Service to AAPT, during their 2022 Winter Meeting. He is being recognized for his work on diversity and equity in Physics Education.

McCachren Recipient of the AAPT 2022 Homer L. Dodge Citation

AAPT has announced that Dave McCachren will receive the association's Homer L. Dodge Citation for Distinguished Service to AAPT, during their 2022 Winter Meeting.
