The furrows in the skin represent the natural reduction in collagen production, resulting in loss of skin elasticity. As elasticity decreases with age, there is lower tension of the skin to its attachment points. The force of gravity pulls the loosened skin downwards because the elasticity of the skin is not sufficient enough to support the weight of the skin that is situated between the attachment points.
