Dear AAPT Member, As you tackle the upcoming school year, remember that you can count on AAPT to have just what you need. This new member newsletter points you to the resources that will make your teaching easier and more effective. One of the best parts of AAPT membership is the chance to connect with other physics educators whether online, at workshops and local section meetings, or at national meetings. Our 129th Summer Meeting just wrapped up this week, but plans for the 130th National Meeting in Albuquerque, NM next January are fully underway. You'll find the speakers and workshops fascinating, but we know from experience that the friendships that you develop will prove to be invaluable in your professional development. Don't miss the link to our new products catalog or the downloadable $20 meeting coupon. And best wishes for a successful school year. Valerie Evans |

Education/Development Popular New Faculty Workshop fills up early - nominate your faculty member today Each
November AAPT holds a workshop for new physics and astronomy faculty.
The workshop is intended for faculty in the first few years of their initial
tenure-track appointment at a four-year college or university. The workshop
helps new faculty understand how students learn physics and astronomy
and outlines how this information supports a new professional teaching
approach. Read
more about the New Faculty Workshop Each year nearly 10,000 high school students take a 40-question, timed, multiple-choice test under their school's supervision. Participating students and schools are eligible for prizes. This year's awards included gifts from Texas Instruments and Frey Scientific, free trips, free memberships, certificates and t-shirts. Benefits/Services 2005 product catalog offers members a 20% discount and new titles Ready for some summer reading? AAPT's new product catalog will go online later this month. New titles include: Back-of-the-Envelope Physics, Hands-on-Physics Activities with Real-Life Applications and Teaching about Impulse and Momentum. Another plus. The catalog now offers a 20% discount to members on products produced by AAPT. (Savings Tip) You can still use your member discount, even if your school is paying for the materials. Simply ensure that your name and AAPT ID number are referenced on the school purchase order. Get your free book and make your undergraduate physics program successful What makes an undergraduate physics program thrive? Three years ago, the Strategic Programs for Innovations in Undergraduate Physics (SPIN-UP) set out to answer that question. SPIN-UP's published conclusions, Strategic Programs for Innovations in Undergraduate Physics: Project Report, is available in limited quantities. Read
more about the SPIN-UP program Free educational resources available. AAPT members may request up to 15 complimentary copies each of several educational resources: Guidelines for High School Physics Programs

Networking
Opportunities World Year of Physics (WYP) generates activities - excitement Join with other physicists to take the World Year of Physics into your community. Locate a speaker, use an activity in the classroom, subscribe to the online newsletter or submit your own event plan. Read more about the activities planned for the World Year of Physics Need cash to finance your WYP activity? AAPT has budgeted $1000 to be divided among several educators who need assistance funding their WYP event. Proposals must focus on innovative ways of sharing information about physics and WYP with the school, community or surrounding areas. Read
more about applying for the Innovative High School Physics Teachers grant. Meet other physicists in your area at local section meetings Many sections meet in the fall right after school starts. Locate your local leaders and become active in your own community. Local leadership schedules the meeting agenda and time. A typical section meeting includes workshops, demonstrations, guest speakers and plenty of time to talk to colleagues. Contact an AAPT certified high school teacher-leader in your area The Physics Teaching Resource Agents (PTRA) program has nearly two hundred accomplished teacher-leaders who are trained and updated yearly to conduct an extensive series of workshops through out the United States. The teacher-leaders are trained and certified by AAPT. Contact a PTRA in your area to
learn more about the excitement of teaching and learning physics. |
