Physical Fragments, Spring 2004

Dear AAPT Member,

As you tackle the upcoming school year, remember that you can count on AAPT to have just what you need. This new member newsletter points you to the resources that will make your teaching easier and more effective.

One of the best parts of AAPT membership is the chance to connect with other physics educators whether online, at workshops and local section meetings, or at national meetings.

Our 129th Summer Meeting just wrapped up this week, but plans for the 130th National Meeting in Albuquerque, NM next January are fully underway. You'll find the speakers and workshops fascinating, but we know from experience that the friendships that you develop will prove to be invaluable in your professional development.

Don't miss the link to our new products catalog or the downloadable $20 meeting coupon. And best wishes for a successful school year.

Education/Development

Popular New Faculty Workshop fills up early - nominate your faculty member today

Each November AAPT holds a workshop for new physics and astronomy faculty. The workshop is intended for faculty in the first few years of their initial tenure-track appointment at a four-year college or university. The workshop helps new faculty understand how students learn physics and astronomy and outlines how this information supports a new professional teaching approach.

Physics Bowl winners announced

Each year nearly 10,000 high school students take a 40-question, timed, multiple-choice test under their school's supervision. Participating students and schools are eligible for prizes. This year's awards included gifts from Texas Instruments and Frey Scientific, free trips, free memberships, certificates and t-shirts.

The sky is the limit for Rocketry Challengers

Find out what it takes to enter the Team America Rocketry Challenge held each spring. This year, through AAPT's supporting role, 100 teams from 31 states were able to compete. Under the guidance of a teacher, teams of high school and middle school students designed and built a safe and stable two-stage model rocket flight vehicle, used it to lift a fragile payload (two Grade A raw eggs) 381 meters off the ground, and then parachuted the eggs back to the ground. This year's top 10 teams split a prize pool of $50,000 in savings bonds.

Six Flags America challenges students to build their own roller coaster

Designing and building their own 'dream' roller coaster brings a new enthusiasm to the physics classroom. AAPT, in partnership with Six Flags America, encourages schools to build and enter roller coaster models built by teams of high school or middle school students. Plan to participate in the Six Flags American Annual Roller Coaster building contest held every spring.

Meet other physicists in your area at local section meetings

Many sections meet in the fall right after school starts. Locate your local leaders and become active in your own community. Local leadership schedules the meeting agenda and time. A typical section meeting includes workshops, demonstrations, guest speakers and plenty of time to talk to colleagues.
