National Meetings

Top physicists lecture at National Meetings

At each national meeting, we honor outstanding physics educators and leaders from around the world. These acclaimed educators lecture and confer with attendees during the meeting. AAPT's Winter Meeting, in conjunction with the National Society of Hispanic Physicists, is your next opportunity to hear these notable physicists speak in person.

You may know one of the honorees recognized during our 2004 Winter and Summer National Meetings.

Education/Development

Scholarship money available for undergrads planning to teach

We believe in the next generation of physics teachers. Undergraduate students in, or planning to enter, physics teacher preparation curricula and high school seniors planning to enter such curricula are eligible to win up to $2000 per year for up to four years. This scholarship is supported by an endowment funded by Barbara Lotze. Apply.

Money available for physics outreach

As a teacher, do you wish you could find the money to finance your creative ideas? Through the contributions of AAPT members, monies are available through several grants.

Funding for High School teachers. AAPT offers grants to high school teachers who want to organize a physics demonstration show or an open house for their high school or community. Since this is the World Year of Physics, all proposals must incorporate that theme. The more innovative the project; the better your chance of winning. Apply.

All teaching levels eligible. The Bauder fund, which is open to all teaching levels, will award a minimum of 20 grants of up to $1,000 for outreach activities such as WYP 2005 demonstration shows for the public, make-and-take workshops for K-12 teachers, WYP 2005 displays for libraries and similar public places, and other similar activities. Apply.

Start-up money available

WIf you need financial aid developing and marketing an innovative teaching product or service for physics and other sciences, apply to AAPT's Venture Fund. Projects that have been supported by the Venture Fund include converting the Physics Cinema Classics video from laser disk to DVD and putting the Powerful Ideas in Physical Science materials onto CD. Another recent project is the Tacoma Narrows Bridge video.

High School Photo Contest winners garner recognition

Challenge your high school students to photograph a physical phenomena and provide a short explanation. Winners are selected during the Summer Meeting. The winning photographs, complete with photographer and school credit, are featured during the year on AAPT calendars, the Physical Fragments homepage, and journal covers. Read contest details and see the 2004 winning photos.

Rocketry challenge ignites student interest

The Team America Rocketry Challenge demands team work, ingenuity, and a practical application of mathematics and physics. Open to middle and high school teams, teams compete regionally, culminating in a national Challenge each spring.
