Physics Education Week in Pennsylvania

Governor Corbett Has Declared July 29-August 4, 2012 "Physics Education Week" in Pennsylvania

The 2012 AAPT Summer Meeting in Philadelphia, PA is under way! Below is important information to help your trip run smoothly:

The meeting will be held at the University of Pennsylvania with registration, exhibits and posters in Houston Hall. See the Map of Campus (pdf), the Interactive Street Map initially centered on the Crowne Plaza or an Interactive Search Map initially centered on Penn's Campus.

AAPT Registration will be located on the 1st floor Houston Hall (3417 Spruce Street).  You must come to registration and pick-up your materials before attending any workshops, sessions or committee meetings.

Registration hours are as follows:

  • Friday, July 27 – 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm
    Saturday, July 28 – 7:00 am to 4:00 pm
    Sunday, July 29 – 7:00 am to 4:00 pm and 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm
    Monday, July 30 – 7:00 am to 5:00 pm
    Tuesday, July 31 – 7:00 am to 4:30 pm
    Wednesday, August 1 – 8:00 am to 3:00 pm


• Weather and Dress - The average daily temperature in Philadelphia during the conference is expected to be between 85 – 95 degrees.  Attire for the conference is casual and of course it never hurts to carry an umbrella. Meeting rooms can be chilly, so a sweater is recommended. Don’t forget to pack your most comfortable shoes since a lot of walking will be required.

• Airport Transportation:  In baggage claim at each terminal, there is a ground transportation desk. The attendant will assist you in connecting with the Lady Liberty shuttle (approximately $10).  A taxi stand is located outside of the baggage claim at each terminal (approximately $30).  SEPTA Regional Rail Airport Line connects all airport terminals with 30th Street Amtrak Station ($7). 

• Workshops: You must come to registration before heading to your weekend workshop.  All workshops will held in David Rittenhouse Labs (209 S 33rd Street/at Walnut).  A number of workshops are still available for registration. 

• Exhibit Hall:  The exhibit hall will be located in Houston Hall on two separate floors.  Hall one is located on the ground level in the Hall of Flags and Hall two on the first floor in the Bodek Lounge.  Join on Sunday from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. for the opening reception and of course come back for morning coffee and muffins, an afternoon snack and a chance to win a Kindle or Nook.

The AAPT 2012 Summer meeting will take place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, home of the first great American experimental physicist, Ben Franklin.  Physics is an experimental science.  Encouraging and empowering the next generation to embrace the art of experimentation that lies at the core of  physics, will ensure that our field remains vibrant and alive.
