Rachel Ivie Chosen for new Role at AAPT
December 19, 2023—College Park, Maryland. The American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) has named Rachel Ivie as Director of Higher Education Programs and Grants, reporting to AAPT’s CEO, Beth Cunningham. Ivie will be a member of the Senior Management Team and will work with the team to set the Association’s operational goals and priorities based on the Board-approved strategic plan. She will work closely with AAPT two-year college and four-year college and university members to generate ideas for engaging higher education faculty in AAPT, developing strategic initiatives for physics in higher education, and maintaining publicly available information about AAPT’s higher education programs.
“I’m excited to be working with AAPT and its members to ensure a robust future for physics education,” she said. Ivie will be joining AAPT after working at the American Institute of Physics, where she served as Director of the Statistical Research Center, then Senior Director of Education and Research, and recently as Senior Research Fellow and Interim Director of the Society of Physics Students and Sigma Pi Sigma.
In 2021, Ivie was recognized by the American Astronomical Society as a Fellow “For a groundbreaking career of statistical studies tracking important diversity, equity, and inclusion issues in the astronomical sciences.” She brings to AAPT and her new role a strong connection with the physics and astronomy community, deep knowledge of physics and astronomy in higher education, work on projects focused on measuring inequity in physics, collaborations on several projects in Physics Education Research, grant writing and administration experience, and teaching experience.
