Jocelyn Bell Burnell Recognized as 2023 Recipient of the Richtmyer Memorial Lecture Award
The American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) announced today that Jocelyn Bell Burnell has been selected to receive the 2023 Richtmyer Memorial Lecture Award. She is recognized with the award for outstanding contributions to physics and for effectively communicating those contributions to physics educators. The award will be presented at a Ceremonial Session of the AAPT 2023 Winter Meeting. Read more
Darsa Donelan Named as 2023 Recipient of the Doc Brown Futures Award
AAPT has announced that the 2023 recipient of the Doc Brown Futures Award is Darsa Donelan. The Doc Brown Futures Award recognizes early-career members who demonstrate excellence in their contributions to AAPT and physics education and exhibit the potential to serve in an AAPT leadership role. The award will be presented during the 2023 Winter Meeting. Read more
AAPT Named Kimberly Ann Coble as the 2023 John David Jackson Excellence in Graduate Physics Education Awardee
The American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) has announced that the John David Jackson Excellence in Graduate Physics Education Award for 2023 will be awarded to Kimberly Ann Coble, Professor of Physics at San Francisco State University. This prestigious award will be presented to Coble during the 2023 AAPT Winter Meeting. Coble was selected to receive the Jackson Award in recognition of her work as a teacher of graduate Physics and Astronomy. She is a pioneer in graduate physics & astronomy education. Read more
S. James Gates, Jr. to Receive AAPT 2023 Oersted Medal
Dr. Sylvester James Gates, Jr. has been named as the 2023 recipient of the prestigious Hans Christian Oersted Medal, presented by the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT). The Medal will be awarded at a Ceremonial Session of the 2023 AAPT Winter Meeting. The Oersted Medal recognizes his outstanding, widespread, and lasting impact on the teaching of physics through his national leadership in physics education, his exceptional service to AAPT, and his mentoring of students and in-service teachers. The year of 2022 marks the fifty-first consecutive year of his service as a university instructor in mathematics and physics. Read more
Alice Flarend to be Recognized as a Recipient of the 2023 Homer L. Dodge Citation for Distinguished Service to AAPT
AAPT has announced that Alice Flarend will receive the association's Homer L. Dodge Citation for Distinguished Service to AAPT, during their 2023 Winter Meeting. Flarend, physics teacher at Bellwood-Antis High School, Bellwood, PA is honored for exemplary service contributions to the mission of the American Association of Physics Teachers through exceptional leadership and motivation to the PTRA community, AAPT's Committee on physics in Pre-High School Education, and to individual members. 2023 Homer L. Dodge Citation for Distinguished Service to AAPT to be Awarded to Glenda Denicolo
AAPT has announced that Glenda Denicolo will receive the association's Homer L. Dodge Citation for Distinguished Service to AAPT, during their 2023 Winter Meeting. Denicolo, Associate Professor at Suffolk County Community College is honored for exemplary service contributions to the mission of the American Association of Physics Teachers to through exceptional leadership and motivation to the TYC community, AAPT's Committee on Physics in Two-Year Colleges, and to individual members. AAPT Participating in the AAAS SEA Change Professional Society Pilot
AAPT has been selected to be one of four participating organizations in the SEA Change initiative. Early in 2021, AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science) accepted proposals from science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) professional societies to participate in a systemic change initiative called SEA (STEMM Equity Achievement) Change. SEA Change provided an award of $10,000 to each organization to participate in the adaptation and piloting of the SEA Change self-assessment and action planning framework. The AAPT Board of Directors has made a $10,000 match to support completing the AAPT self-assessment. Read More.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at AAPT - An Update from the DEI Task Force
Thanks to the DEI Task Force's commitment and collaboration with Brevity & Wit we are now in the final stages of the work of the Task Force. We led two sessions jointly with the AAPT President at SM22 designed to provide context and information and promote dialogue on our work thus far. If you missed the two sessions at SM22, don't worry! A recording of one of the sessions is available on COMMUNITIES here. We also shared the late summer/early fall 2022 quarterly DEI on COMMUNITIES in October. See this. We continue to work with AAPT leadership to develop a DEI governance structure that best serves the needs of our members and the community of physics educators. We anticipate that this structure will be presented to the Board and community in early 2023. We are also working to include information about the DEI value proposition, vision, and guiding principles on the AAPT website. Stay tuned for updates in early 2023!

Call to Area Committees and List Serves - AAPT COMMUNITIES
As you know, AAPT is retiring its Lyris list serves.
If you chair an Area Committee or run one of the list-serves, and are interested in creating a group on COMMUNITIES, please get in touch with us. This may be the best way to create a "friends of the committee" group going forward. Using this method, the Chair could set the default delivery option for the group to Real-Time, which would most accurately mirror the current list serve model. These groups would be open for any AAPT member to join. We would like to start with a handful of these groups as a pilot program to see how it works. If you are interested, please reach out to Mike Hall (mhall@aapt.org).
For those who do not choose to create a dedicated group on COMMUNITIES, you can still use the platform to let AAPT members know about your activities by posting in the General Community. We encourage all AAPT members to visit the AAPT COMMUNITIES platform and follow the Tag for any committee that you are interested in. Likewise, we encourage Committee Chairs to use this tag when posting information relevant to your committee.

Book Companion, Statistical and Thermal Physics Programs
This freely available online collection includes all the programs used in the text "Statistical and Thermal Physics: With Computer Applications", 2nd ed., Harvey Gould and Jan Tobochnik, Princeton University Press (2021). These ready-to-run, interactive simulations are designed to help students gain a better understanding of statistical and thermal physics. Physical parameters in the simulations can be changed to explore the systems being modeled. The topics covered range from temperature and approaches to equilibrium, solid and gas models, spin systems, critical phenomena, and near-equilibrium time-dependent phenomena. All simulations are provided in HTML5-JavaScript and will run on most computers and mobile devices.
Teaching High School Physics - Three Titles Supporting Physics Educators
The Teaching High School Physics books by Carl J. Wenning and Rebecca E. Vieyra provide a practical foundation for physics teaching, techniques for engaging students, managing learning difficulties, and tips for curriculum development and lesson planning.

Want to Engage More with AAPT? Nominate Yourself to Become a Member of an Area Committee!
The National Nominating Committee is seeking nominations for all Area Committee. As an Area Committee member you will play a crucial role in helping your Area Committee actively work on their respective missions. All AAPT members are eligible to serve on an Area Committee.
These nominees will be considered for the WM23-WM26 Cycle (term begins at the conclusion of WM23 and ends at the conclusion of WM26). Nominations are considered on a rolling basis but priority will be given to applications submitted by August 5, 2022. Read More.
Open Letter: "Increase Investment in Accessible Physics Labs"
The AAPT Committee on Laboratories assembled a task force whose charge was to write an open letter to the physics education community calling for increased investment in accessible lab courses. In exploring ideas and strategies for improving accessibility, the task force recognized that the development of multiple pathways for laboratory investigation creates opportunities to expand learning opportunities for more students in physics lab programs. The task force identified two types of investment, proactive and reactive investment. Strategies for increasing proactive investment are outlined for six target groups: physics lab instructors and staff, physics education researchers, physics departments, online physics content creators, physics conference planners, and member societies. The intended audiences for this document consist of undergraduate physics students, staff, and faculty, especially those who have direct stake in laboratory courses; physics departments; and member societies, including AAPT. Joint Statement on Sustainable Systems for Quality Teaching
The AAPT Board of Directors unanimously endorsed a joint statement on Sustainable Systems for Quality Teaching. The statement can be found here. The statement focuses on creating a sustainable system that prepares, retains, and supports teachers through accessible, high-quality teacher preparation, competitive compensation, ample resources, and ongoing professional learning and mentoring opportunities. We encourage you to amplify the message in this statement by posting a note on your social media and including #SupportTeachers and @aaptHQ. The statement has also been posted on the news wire - see this and on AAPT's social media.

The mission of the U.S. Physics Team Program is to promote and demonstrate academic excellence through preparation for and participation in the International Physics Olympiad. AAPT is responsible for recruiting, selecting and training teams each year to compete in the International Physics Olympiad Competition. Newly Launched! The KITP Fellows program supports a single long visit (6-8 week) at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics in Santa Barbara, CA from experimentalists, observers or theorists in physics or astronomy departments at teaching-intensive U.S. colleges or universities designated as Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs). All applicants must be active ladder faculty (assistant, associate or full professors) at a non-R1 MSI with an undergraduate major in physics or astronomy. Congratulations to Danielle Buggé for being named the 2022 PhysTEC National Teacher of the Year! Presidential Awards for Excellence in STEM Teaching Now Open
The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) administers Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST), created by Congress in 1983, on behalf of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). The awards are the nation's highest honors for teachers of STEM, including Computer Science. This year's (2022-2023) awards will honor science, technology, engineering, or mathematics teachers working in grades 7-12. Nominations close on January 9, 2023. Applications must be completed by February 6, 2023.
APS EDI Fellows Program Update!
The American Physical Society (APS) Equity, Diversity, Inclusion (EDI) Fellows Program is reaching the end of its first year. The Fellows, working with the leadership team, have developed a workshop to support physics educators who desire to address classroom EDI issues in a timely way but are hesitant because they lack preparation to do so. We are now at the point in the grant where we will run multiple pilot workshops for targeted APS and AAPT volunteer groups for the purpose of receiving formative feedback. Our goal is to refine the workshop before we offer the workshop to the broader physics community after the completion of our Innovation Fund Award. Journal of High School Discovery
The Journal of High School Discovery is a new outlet for young researchers to share their work. We are the only journal created and run by high school students to publish the work of other high school students. This is a project we started out of a strong passion for science and a desire to show the world the passion of other like minded students.
We are looking for physics teachers to help curate our articles. As a curator, you would assist us by reviewing submissions for accuracy and scientific value, shaping the future of the journal. In addition, we ask for your help in connecting us with passionate students who may be interested in publishing their work.

The textbook Physics - The First Science by Peter Lindenfeld ad Suzanne White Brahmia (Rutgers University Press 2011) is now freely available at firstscience.rutgers.edu , where you can also see the reviews that appeared in American Journal of Physics, The Physics Teacher, and Physics Today.
Textbook on Wave Physics - Freely Available
Introduction to Wave Physics by Anthony Gerig is a textbook designed for a single semester, intermediate level course on waves. It initially focuses on one-dimensional waves to introduce major concepts, and then extends each of those concepts to three dimensions for rectangular, spherical and cylindrical coordinates. Both scalar and vector waves are addressed, using acoustic waves as the primary example of the former and electromagnetic waves as the primary example of the latter. Topics covered include interference, reflection and transmission, cavities and waveguides, radiation, diffraction, and scattering. The book can be freely downloaded at ResearchGate or the book website.

Beamline for Schools Competition
BL4S is a physics competition that invites teams of high-school students from all around the world to conceive an experiment that can be performed at the test beam facility of a particle accelerator. In 2023,the winners will be three, two teams will perform their experiments at CERN and one at DESY. There will be additional prizes for a selection of teams (up to 30). All the perspective participants who register will have the possibility to follow on-line events and virtual visits of CERN and DESY in preparation for the submission of their proposal. All the information can be found in the official invitation . The deadline to send a proposal is fixed to April 12, 2023.
Arizona State University Master of Natural Science Degree for High School Teachers
Arizona State University has an interdisciplinary Master of Natural Science (MNS) degree in physics for high school and TYC teachers. Courses are in summer, and the degree is founded on Modeling Instruction. Teachers in 15 western states can apply for 150% of resident graduate tuition; the deadline is APRIL 1.

Medical physics website available as resource for physics educators
The American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), an affiliated organization with AAPT, just completed a large-scale effort to launch a public education website. Medical physics is a field that uses concepts in physics to address questions in medicine. Medical physicists work in research, education, and clinical capacities in medical imaging, radiation therapy, and health physics. Physics students who want to learn how an MRI scanner works, read about how radiation affects cells, or just want to learn about a career in applied physics will enjoy this website, which includes an active "Ask the Expert" platform. https://www.medicalradiationinfo.org/.
The American Modeling Teachers Association
The American Modeling Teachers Association has been transforming STEM education since 2005. AMTA provides professional development on an instructional strategy called, Modeling Instruction, which builds conceptual understanding, improves classroom discourse, and engages students in the learning process. AMTA will soon announce our slate of virtual and face-to-face courses for 2023! Hosts are also beginning to schedule Modeling Workshops in different regions across the country. The Living Physics Portal is an online environment for physics educators to find, share, and discuss free teaching materials for introductory physics for life sciences (IPLS). The objective of the Portal is to improve the education of the next generation of medical professionals and biologists by making physics classes more relevant for life sciences students. The Portal is available for free to all verified educators.
Features available on the Portal are:
• Anyone can view and download over 200 resources in our Vetted Library.
• Registered users can also view and download over 100 resources in our Community Library, along with answer keys and other instructor supplements, and join discussions about resources.
• Registered users can contribute curricular resources and instructor resources to our Community Library and Vetted Library, including adaptations of others' resources, and join our discussions.
