Seeking Nominations for the At-Large Early Career Member to the AAPT Board of Directors
The AAPT Board of Directors recently voted to change the By-Law amendments to add an At-Large Early Career Member to the Board of Directors. A summary of the criteria and rationale is here. The Nominating Committee is now in the process of accepting nominations for this new position. Nominations including self-nominations for this position should be sent to the Nominating Committee, Chair Janie Head at here. no later than July 10th.
2023 AAPT Winter Meeting Update
The 2023 AAPT Winter Meeting has been scheduled for Portland, Oregon on January 14-17, 2023 at the Hilton Portland Downtown.
Nominations for Renaming the Robert A. Millikan Medal
During the Spring AAPT Board of Directors meeting, the AAPT Board voted unanimously to remove Robert A. Millikan’s name from the award that recognizes “those who have made notable and intellectually creative contributions to the teaching of physics.” This decision follows the recent decision by Cal Tech to remove Millikan’s name from buildings based on his participation in the eugenics movement through affiliation with the Human Betterment Foundation, an organization which supported eugenic sterilization research. The AAPT Board of Directors is now seeking nominations for renaming the award. Submit your nomination using this form by June 15, 2021. The Board anticipates announcing the new name of the award later this year.

Shirley Jackson to Receive AAPT 2021 Oersted Medal
Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson has been named as the 2021 recipient of the prestigious Hans Christian Oersted Medal, presented by the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT). The Medal will be awarded at a Ceremonial Session of the 2021 AAPT Summer Meeting. The Oersted Medal recognizes her outstanding, widespread, and lasting impact on the teaching of physics through her pioneering national leadership in physics education, her exceptional service to AAPT, and her mentoring of students and in-service teachers.
Dr. Jackson, President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, is a theoretical physicist. She has had a distinguished career that includes senior leadership positions in academia, government, industry, and research. She holds an S.B. in Physics, and a Ph.D. in Theoretical Elementary Particle Physics — both from MIT. She is the first African American woman to receive a doctorate from MIT — in any field — and has been a trailblazer throughout her career, including as the first African-American woman to lead a top-ranked research university. Ramón Barthelemy Named as 2021 Recipient of The Doc Brown Futures Award
AAPT has announced that the recipient of the Doc Brown Futures Award is Dr. Ramón S. Barthelemy. The Doc Brown Futures Award recognizes early-career members who demonstrate excellence in their contributions to AAPT and physics education and exhibit the potential to serve in an AAPT leadership role. The award will be presented during the 2021 Summer Meeting. Read more
2021 Millikan Medal Awarded to Gregory E. Francis
AAPT has announced that Gregory E. Francis will receive the Robert A. Millikan Medal during the 2021 Summer Meeting. This award recognizes educators who have made notable and intellectually creative contributions to the teaching of physics. Francis is the Director of the Master of Science in Science Education Program at Montana State University, Bozeman, Montana. This program offers a unique blend of online and field courses for K-12 educators. In its 23rd year, the program has produced over 1200 graduates. Read more
Helen Czerski Named as Recipient of the 2021 Klopsteg Memorial Lecture Award
The American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) announced today that Helen Czerski, University College London, London, England, is the 2021 recipient of the Klopsteg Memorial Lecture Award. The lecture and award will be presented during the AAPT Summer Meeting. This award recognizes educators who have made notable and creative contributions to the teaching of physics.

AAPT 2021 David Halliday and Robert Resnick Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Physics Teaching
The American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) announced that Anne J. Cox will receive the 2021 David Halliday and Robert Resnick Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Physics Teaching. This award is given in recognition of contributions to undergraduate physics teaching and awardees are chosen for their extraordinary accomplishments in communicating the excitement of physics to their students. John Wiley & Sons is the principal source of funding for this award, through its donation to the AAPT. Read more
2021 Paul W. Zitzewitz Excellence in K-12 Teaching Award
The American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT)has announced that the 2021 Paul Zitzewitz Excellence in K-12 Physics Teaching Award winner is Bradford N. Talbert, a physics teacher at Lone Peak High School, Highland, Utah. This award is in recognition for contributions to pre-college physics teaching and awardees are chosen for their extraordinary accomplishments in communicating the excitement of physics to their students. New Book Companion, Statistical and Thermal Physics Programs
This freely available online collection includes all the programs used in the text "Statistical and Thermal Physics: With Computer Applications", 2nd ed., Harvey Gould and Jan Tobochnik, Princeton University Press (2021). These ready-to-run, interactive simulations are designed to help students gain a better understanding of statistical and thermal physics. Physical parameters in the simulations can be changed to explore the systems being modeled. The topics covered range from temperature and approaches to equilibrium, solid and gas models, spin systems, critical phenomena, and near-equilibrium time-dependent phenomena. All simulations are provided in HTML5-JavaScript and will run on most computers and mobile devices.

Learn Quantum Information Science
Break down the content silos and embrace STEM! What do the following have in common: chemistry, physics, astronomy, computer science, technology, engineering, and math? Each year AAPT sponsors a competition for high school students to represent the United States at the International Physics Olympiad Competition. The mission of the U.S. Physics Team Program is to promote and demonstrate academic excellence through preparation for and participation in the International Physics Olympiad. AAPT is responsible for recruiting, selecting and training teams each year to compete in the International Physics Olympiad Competition. Your contribution is needed to support these high school students as they prepare to represent the U.S. internationally. Donate now!
2021 F=ma Contest
The F=ma exam for 2021 was offered online on February 18, 2021 at 4 pm EST. Whether your students are physically and/or virtually attending school, we conducted the exam online for greater ease and convenience.

2021 New Faculty Workshop
Physics and astronomy faculty members in the first few years of their teaching appointments are invited to attend the online Physics and Astronomy New Faculty Workshop, June 28 – July 1, 2021.
Registration is available at https://portal.aapt.org/Event. Please register before Friday, June 4, 2021. The registration fee is $45.
Tenure-track faculty, full-time lecturers (or equivalent), adjunct faculty and part-time faculty and post-docs are encouraged to register for the Workshop. The focus is on undergraduate physics and astronomy education. This Workshop series is sponsored by the American Association of Physics Teachers, the American Physical Society, and the American Astronomical Society and is funded by the National Science Foundation and Research Corporation for Science Advancement.

The camp is a self-organizing opportunity for teachers of high school physics classes to discuss topics such as inquiry labs, standards-based grading, and computer–based labs. Are you interested in making significant changes or learning how to approach challenges in your physics department? The Effective Practices in Physics (EP3) Departmental Action Leadership Institutes (DALIs) has been created to address challenges and seize opportunities that are relevant to physics departments. The DALIs will meet bi-weekly for at least a year to help departments engage in a process, using the EP3 Guide , that will lead to sustainable improvements to undergraduate education and to a stronger culture of self-reflection and action. Effective Practices for Undergraduate Physics website launched. The joint AAPT/APS EP3 Guide project's website is now available at https://ep3guide.org/. The Guide has detailed recommendations and guidelines for enhancing all aspects of undergraduate physics programs.
14th Inter-American Conference on Physics Education
Join us for the 14th Inter-American Conference on Physics Education (IACPE/CIAEF), virtually this July. The tri-lingual conference will be held in English, Spanish and Portuguese. The theme of this year’s conference is “Rethinking the Teaching of Physics in New Scenarios.” The conference, hosted by Costa Rica and Guatemala, will be held from July 5th to July 9th, 2021. Papers, posters and workshops are sought. Abstract submission deadline is April 15th. Peer-review of submitted papers will be available and published in a special edition of the "Enseñanza de la Física", journal of the Association of Physics Teachers of Argentina. Registration for the conference is only $50 US. "Physics in an Astronomy Context" Mini Workshop Series
The AAPT/Temple team of the NASA Heliophysics Education Consortium will be offering a series of short 1.5-hour workshops each third Saturday from April to August. These workshops are directed to all introductory physics teachers (high school, two-year college, and university), and will focus on lesson ideas and digital resource packages (AAPT Digi Kits) that help teach physics topics in an astronomy context. AAPM Virtual Conference Opportunity
As part of the Undergraduate Summer Fellowship and Outreach Subcommittee’s work, the American Association of Physicist’s in Medicine is very excited to announce that we are covering the cost of registration fees for select undergraduate students to attend our Annual Summer Meeting, July 25 – July 29, 2021. This conference draws roughly 4,000 participants to the world’s largest program of scientific, educational, and professional presentations, in addition to technical exhibits and social programs that targets the medical physics community specifically.
We are seeking undergraduates who are interested in learning more about emerging clinical and research topics in medical physics. Ideal attendees will have declared a major or be eligible to declare a major in physics, engineering, or other science, with substantial emphasis on mathematics and courses such as modern physics/quantum mechanics, electricity and magnetism or equivalent courses in engineering sciences.

We are very interested in hearing from past PICUP workshop participants about what you’ve done in your course(s), and encourage you to submit an abstract for a contributed presentation.

In the last four years, several hundred people have joined the PICUP community, united by the common goal of using computation to improve our physics courses and curricula. In this conference, PICUPers will share what we have accomplished, and we will discuss how to move forward into the future. If you have attended a half-day, full-day, or week-long PICUP workshop, please join us!

AAVSO's 2021 Spectroscopy Workshop
The American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO) is an international science and education nonprofit organization. AAVSO's 2021 Spectroscopy Workshop will provide education and tools for high school teachers to engage their students in hands-on astronomy and physics studies. AAVSO and the National Science Foundation (NSF) are partnering to award grants to five high school teachers to attend the Workshop with other AAVSO citizen astronomers to learn the basics of stellar spectroscopy using small telescopes. The goal of the Teacher Grant is for teachers to incorporate the knowledge and skills acquired in the Workshop into their science curriculum. Participants are welcome to stay and attend the AAVSO Annual Meeting of citizen and professional astronomers, November 5–7. Grant recipients will have the opportunity to present their spectroscopy curriculum at a future AAVSO Meeting. Undergraduate and Graduate STEM Students' Experiences during COVID-19: Proceedings of a Virtual Workshop Series was released on March 23, 2021 by the Board on Science Education and the Board on Higher Education and Workforce. It begins to document the changes and responses of institutions of higher education to the pandemic and discusses the impact on students. The workshop series highlights ideas that can assist institutions to better serve all students. Read more.
The American Modeling Teachers Association
The American Modeling Teachers Association has been transforming STEM education since 2005 and provides professional development and support for science teachers across the globe. It is AMTA’s goal to promote the use of an instructional strategy, known as Modeling Instruction, which builds conceptual understanding, improves classroom discourse, and engages students in the learning process. AMTA is excited to announce our slate of virtual courses for 2021! Regional hosts are also beginning to schedule face-to-face workshops with safety as a top priority. The Living Physics Portal is Now Seeking Beta Users!
The Living Physics Portal is a new online environment for physics faculty to share and discuss free curricular resources for teaching introductory physics for life sciences (IPLS). The objective of the Portal is to improve the education of the next generation of medical professionals and biologists by making physics classes more relevant for life sciences students. We are currently looking for beta users to contribute curricular materials to this early version of the site, browse our existing collection of high quality materials from our team, and give us feedback on the site.
