AAPT announces the Barbara Wolff-Reichert Travel Grant. This endowment fund was established in 2023, by Jonathan F. Reichert to honor Barbara Wolff-Reichert and to encourage both new and experienced high school teachers, who have never done so, to attend and participate in national meetings of the American Association of Physics Teachers. Workshops
AAPT is offering a number of workshops in association with the upcoming 2023 AAPT Summer Meeting. These workshops will take place on July 15-16. This is a great opportunity to gather with your colleagues and learn some new teaching techniques, while engaging in thoughtful discussion. Be sure and register early, as these workshops can fill-up quickly. Register for a workshop. You do not need to be a registrant of the AAPT Summer Meeting to attend one of these educational workshops. There is a special workshop only registration rate available.

Plenary Speaker
Dr. Cary Supalo currently serves as a Research Developer at the Educational Testing Service (ETS). His primary responsibilities are assisting with conducting usability studies on current and new innovative high stakes tests. Additionally, he works with key stakeholders both internally and externally to promote inclusion and equity for all test takers. He also serves as an honorary professor of chemistry at the University of Sydney in Australia. There his research interests focus on making chemistry laboratory curricula more accessible for blind and vision impaired students.

Jeffrey Bennett Named as Recipient of the 2023 Klopsteg Memorial Lecture Award
Jeffrey Bennett, astronomer, teacher, and writer, is the 2023 recipient of the Klopsteg Memorial Lecture Award. The lecture and award will be presented during the AAPT Summer Meeting. This award recognizes educators who have made notable and creative contributions to the teaching of physics. Read more
Katherine (Katie) Mack Recognized as 2024 Recipient of the Richtmyer Memorial Lecture Award
The American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) announced that Katherine (Katie) Mack has been selected to receive the 2024 Richtmyer Memorial Lecture Award. She is recognized with the award for outstanding contributions to physics and for effectively communicating those contributions to physics educators. The award will be presented at a Ceremonial Session of the AAPT 2024 Winter Meeting. Read more
Alice Flarend to Receive 2023 Paul W. Zitzewitz Excellence in K-12 Teaching Award
The American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) has announced that the 2023 Paul Zitzewitz Excellence in K-12 Physics Teaching Award winner is Alice Flarend, physics teacher at Bellwood-Antis High School, Bellwood, PA. This award is in recognition for contributions to pre-college physics teaching and awardees are chosen for their extraordinary accomplishments in communicating the excitement of physics to their students. AJP has a New Book Review Editor
Craig Bohren is stepping down as book review editor, a position in which he has served admirably since 2012. Readers often tell me that book reviews are one of their favorite sections. Craig has worked with publishers to select books for review, recruited reviewers, and guided them towards writing the sort of personal and insightful review that we all have enjoyed reading for the past ten years.
Happily, Sathya Guruswamy of the University of California, Santa Barbara, is willing to take on this important task of editing book reviews. If there is a book that you think should be reviewed, or that you are interested in reviewing, please contact her at sgurus@ucsb.edu. Or you can also let her know your areas of interest, and if she needs a review in that area in the future, she'll contact you.

AAPT Participating in the AAAS SEA Change Professional Society Pilot
AAPT has been selected to be one of four participating organizations in the SEA Change initiative. Early in 2021, AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science) accepted proposals from science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) professional societies to participate in a systemic change initiative called SEA (STEMM Equity Achievement) Change. SEA Change provided an award of $10,000 to each organization to participate in the adaptation and piloting of the SEA Change self-assessment and action planning framework. The AAPT Board of Directors has made a $10,000 match to support completing the AAPT self-assessment. Read More.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at AAPT - An Update from the DEI Task Force
We have had a very productive 2022! The AAPT vision, value proposition, guiding principles, and roadmap have been approved by the Board of Directors in early November and are now on the AAPT website. See this. A new DEI governance structure, the DEI Council, that will serve the needs of our members and the community of physics educators was approved by the Board during their recent meeting at WM23. More information will be forthcoming about the DEI Council. We thank members of the DEI Task Force for their valuable contributions over the past two years!

Call to Area Committees and List Serves - AAPT COMMUNITIES
If you chair an Area Committee and are interested in creating a group on COMMUNITIES, please get in touch with us. This may be the best way to create a "friends of the committee" group going forward. Using this method, the Chair could set the default delivery option for the group to Real-Time, which would most accurately mirror the current list serve model. These groups would be open for any AAPT member to join. We would like to start with a handful of these groups as a pilot program to see how it works. If you are interested, please reach out to Mike Hall (mhall@aapt.org).
For those who do not choose to create a dedicated group on COMMUNITIES, you can still use the platform to let AAPT members know about your activities by posting in the General Community. We encourage all AAPT members to visit the AAPT COMMUNITIES platform and follow the Tag for any committee that you are interested in. Likewise, we encourage Committee Chairs to use this tag when posting information relevant to your committee.

2023 U.S. Physics Team Announced
After a rigorous search involving two exams, the American Association of Physics Teachers has identified the top contenders as members of the United States Physics Team. They come from California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, New Jersey, New Mexico, South Carolina, Washington, and Wisconsin. There are high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
These bright emerging physicists will participate in Physics Boot Camp at the University of Maryland in College Park, June 4-14. Most of the students invited to the camp are the top science student in their high school. For many, it is their first chance to meet other students who are truly their peers. The training camp is a crash course in the first two years of university physics. Students learn at a very fast pace. They have an opportunity to hear about cutting edge research from some of the community's leading physicists.
The twenty members of the 2023 U.S. Physics Team will prepare for the mentally grueling exams and lab tests they'll face at the 53rd International Physics Olympiad to be held July 10-17 at National Olympics Memorial Youth Center in Tokyo, where student scholars from many nations will test their knowledge in physics, competing with the world's best. At the end of Camp, the coaches will identify the five students who will represent the United States in the 53rd International Physics Olympiad. Read more

EDI Fellows Program New Pilot Workshop!
In addition to the workshop being held in Sacramento on July 16th, The American Physical Society (APS) Equity, Diversity, Inclusion (EDI) Fellows Program will be holding one more workshop at Kenyon College (Gambier, OH) on September 16th. We still have space available in both pilot workshops! These workshops are designed to support physics educators who desire to address classroom EDI issues in a timely way but are hesitant because they lack preparation to do so. By holding these pilot workshops, we hope to receive formative feedback to refine the workshop before we offer the workshop to the broader physics community after the completion of our Innovation Fund Award. Journal of High School Discovery
The Journal of High School Discovery is a new outlet for young researchers to share their work. We are the only journal created and run by high school students to publish the work of other high school students. This is a project we started out of a strong passion for science and a desire to show the world the passion of other like minded students.
We are looking for physics teachers to help curate our articles. As a curator, you would assist us by reviewing submissions for accuracy and scientific value, shaping the future of the journal. In addition, we ask for your help in connecting us with passionate students who may be interested in publishing their work.

GIREP_EPEC Conference and Award
On 3rd -7th July 2023 the GIREP_EPEC Conference will be held in collaboration with the Faculty of Science, UPJS, Košice, Slovakia on site at the Faculty of Science and online. The theme of the conference is "Physics learning for promoting culture and addressing societal issues". To the GIREP-EPEC 2023 Conference page, Košice, Slovakia (3-7 July 2023): Home page all the details are presented. I ask you to help in spreading the information, to send to the Conference a poster with the information you want to be disseminated and to honor GIREP participating in the opening ceremony in the form you deem most appropriate: in presence, online or with a message.
GIREP is paying more and more attention to a policy that brings quality research into its initiatives and at the same time favors the participation of teachers with research-based contributions. In this context it promotes the SARA BARBIERI Award for a work done by a teacher. On the page of the GIREP GIREP AWARDS-GIREP is published the call concerning a research activity conducted in a school class for at least 12 hours during the last 2 years. I take this opportunity to remind you that the Deadline for the submission was February 28. The evaluation period is March by a Commission of experts by means of a Rubric prepared by GIREP Board and decision will be announced on April 15 in order to invite those who win the prize of € 1000.00 to the GIREP_EPEC Congress in July 2023. "Physics in an Astronomy Context" Mini Workshop Series
The AAPT team of the NASA Heliophysics Education Activation Team (HEAT) will be offering a series of short 1.5-hour workshops one Saturday each month from February through June 2023. These workshops are directed to all physics teachers (middle school, high school, two-year college, and university), and will focus on lesson ideas and digital resource packages (AAPT Digi Kits) that help teach physics topics in an astronomy context. Summer Online Training to Integrate Computer Science Into Physics and Physical Science
Are you code curious? In partnership with AAPT, this summer Prof. Chris Orban will be leading a beginner and intermediate level online course for high school physics and physical science teachers on how to integrate computer science into these subjects in a way that strongly aligns with traditional physics learning goals. Back in 2017, Chris and others started the STEMcoding Project and began creating activities on the physics of video games. Participants have the option to purchase grad credit. Medical physics website available as resource for physics educators
The American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), an affiliated organization with AAPT, just completed a large-scale effort to launch a public education website. Medical physics is a field that uses concepts in physics to address questions in medicine. Medical physicists work in research, education, and clinical capacities in medical imaging, radiation therapy, and health physics. Physics students who want to learn how an MRI scanner works, read about how radiation affects cells, or just want to learn about a career in applied physics will enjoy this website, which includes an active "Ask the Expert" platform. https://www.medicalradiationinfo.org/.
The American Modeling Teachers Association
The American Modeling Teachers Association has been transforming STEM education since 2005. AMTA provides professional development on an instructional strategy called, Modeling Instruction, which builds conceptual understanding, improves classroom discourse, and engages students in the learning process. AMTA will soon announce our slate of virtual and face-to-face courses for 2023! Hosts are also beginning to schedule Modeling Workshops in different regions across the country. Find Resources for Teaching Physics for Life Sciences Students on the Living Physics Portal
The Living Physics Portal is an online environment for physics educators to find, share, and discuss free teaching materials for introductory physics for life sciences (IPLS). The objective of the Portal is to improve the education of the next generation of medical professionals and biologists by making physics classes more relevant for life sciences students. The Portal is available for free to all verified educators.
