Duane B. Merrell Becomes President of AAPT
As the Winter 2023 Winter Meeting came to a close the presidential gavel was presented to Duane Merrell. He will serve as President of the American Association of Physics Teachers for the coming year. Merrell, Associate Teaching Professor, Physics and Astronomy at Brigham Young University (BYU) has been a member of AAPT since 1989 and has served in several positions, including as a Physics Teachers Resouce Agent (PTRA). With more than 20 years of teaching experience in public schools, he was hired by BYU to prepare secondary physical science teachers. Read more
2023 Winter Meeting Highlights
AAPT returned to beautiful downtown Portland, Oregon for the first Winter Meeting since the COVID Pandemic limited in-person gatherings. The headquarters hotels for the 2023 Winter Meeting were the Hilton Portland Downtown and The Duniway Portland a Hilton hotel. Portland Community College and Vernier Science Education hosted workshops on Saturday and Sunday with selections ranging from “Fun, Engaging, Effective, Research-Validated Lab Activities and Demos for Introductory University, College and High School Physics (including Virtual Learning Options), Neutrino Physics Masterclasses” to “PICUP: Integrating Computation in Introductory Physics Courses.” Read more

The institute will be different in time, place, and focus in the summer of 2023. We are going to change the time and place of the PTRA Leadership Institute to coincide with another conference where there are already teachers attending. More details to follow, but for now please note the change:

AAPT Participating in the AAAS SEA Change Professional Society Pilot
AAPT has been selected to be one of four participating organizations in the SEA Change initiative. Early in 2021, AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science) accepted proposals from science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) professional societies to participate in a systemic change initiative called SEA (STEMM Equity Achievement) Change. SEA Change provided an award of $10,000 to each organization to participate in the adaptation and piloting of the SEA Change self-assessment and action planning framework. The AAPT Board of Directors has made a $10,000 match to support completing the AAPT self-assessment. Read More.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at AAPT - An Update from the DEI Task Force
We have had a very productive 2022! The AAPT vision, value proposition, guiding principles, and roadmap have been approved by the Board of Directors in early November and are now on the AAPT website. See this. A new DEI governance structure, the DEI Council, that will serve the needs of our members and the community of physics educators was approved by the Board during their recent meeting at WM23. More information will be forthcoming about the DEI Council. We thank members of the DEI Task Force for their valuable contributions over the past two years!

Call to Area Committees and List Serves - AAPT COMMUNITIES
As you know, AAPT is retiring its Lyris list serves.
If you chair an Area Committee or run one of the list-serves, and are interested in creating a group on COMMUNITIES, please get in touch with us. This may be the best way to create a "friends of the committee" group going forward. Using this method, the Chair could set the default delivery option for the group to Real-Time, which would most accurately mirror the current list serve model. These groups would be open for any AAPT member to join. We would like to start with a handful of these groups as a pilot program to see how it works. If you are interested, please reach out to Mike Hall (mhall@aapt.org).
For those who do not choose to create a dedicated group on COMMUNITIES, you can still use the platform to let AAPT members know about your activities by posting in the General Community. We encourage all AAPT members to visit the AAPT COMMUNITIES platform and follow the Tag for any committee that you are interested in. Likewise, we encourage Committee Chairs to use this tag when posting information relevant to your committee.

The American Journal of Physics is looking for a book review editor
The American Journal of Physics is looking for a book review editor. The book review editor is responsible for selecting books, recruiting volunteer reviewers, and editing the completed reviews. The editor will aim for 6 - 12 book reviews per year. Editors normally have a PhD in physics and hold positions as university faculty, but other qualifications may be considered. The position is compensated with a small stipend. Applications are particularly encouraged from physicists who are members of groups that are under-represented in physics. 2023 AAPT High School Physics Photo Contest
The 2023 High School Physics Photo Contest registration opens March 1, and will close May 15. The contest is open to high school students in grades 9-12. Teachers register on the AAPT website and receive a confirmation code that they will use to allow their students to submit their entries (essay and photo). Photos may be entered in either the Natural photo or Contrived photo category. The top 100 entries will be displayed and judged during the 2023 Summer Meeting in Sacramento, CA. Learn more
Early Career Physics and Astronomy Faculty Teaching Institute (formerly known as the Physics and Astronomy New Faculty Workshop) June 26-29, 2023.
Early career physics and astronomy faculty at four-year colleges and universities are encouraged to register for the NSF-supported June 26-29, 2023 Physics and Astronomy Faculty Teaching Institute - a 3.5 day workshop to be held in Washington, DC. The Institute, organized by the American Association of Physics Teachers, the American Physical Society, and the American Astronomical Society, focuses on developing effective teaching/learning skills as part of overall professional and personal development. Some registration and travel support funds are available for faculty in departments with severely limited financial resources. Preference given to faculty in minority-serving institutions. Each year AAPT sponsors a competition for high school students to represent the United States at the International Physics Olympiad Competition. The mission of the U.S. Physics Team Program is to promote and demonstrate academic excellence through preparation for and participation in the International Physics Olympiad. AAPT is responsible for recruiting, selecting and training teams each year to compete in the International Physics Olympiad Competition. High School Physics Photo Contest Director
AAPT is pleased to announce that Shawn Reeves is the new High School Photo Contest Director. Shawn is a long term AAPT member and has served on a number of AAPT committees. Shawn is currently the Recording Secretary of the New England Section of AAPT. Shawn was a teacher at the Coaltion School for Social Change in New York City, is involved with a non-profit for teachers interested in energy production and use in Massechusetts, and teaches at Babson College. Shawn brings with him an enthusiasm for teaching and learning, previous experience organizing a non-competitive, merit-based challenge, and experience working with a previous director of the Photo Contest. We look forward to working with Shawn this year!

APS EDI Fellows Program Update!
The American Physical Society (APS) Equity, Diversity, Inclusion (EDI) Fellows Program is reaching the end of its first year. The Fellows, working with the leadership team, have developed a workshop to support physics educators who desire to address classroom EDI issues in a timely way but are hesitant because they lack preparation to do so. We are now at the point in the grant where we will run multiple pilot workshops for targeted APS and AAPT volunteer groups for the purpose of receiving formative feedback. Our goal is to refine the workshop before we offer the workshop to the broader physics community after the completion of our Innovation Fund Award. Journal of High School Discovery
The Journal of High School Discovery is a new outlet for young researchers to share their work. We are the only journal created and run by high school students to publish the work of other high school students. This is a project we started out of a strong passion for science and a desire to show the world the passion of other like minded students.
We are looking for physics teachers to help curate our articles. As a curator, you would assist us by reviewing submissions for accuracy and scientific value, shaping the future of the journal. In addition, we ask for your help in connecting us with passionate students who may be interested in publishing their work.

GIREP_EPEC Conference and Award
On 3rd -7th July 2023 the GIREP_EPEC Conference will be held in collaboration with the Faculty of Science, UPJS, Košice, Slovakia on site at the Faculty of Science and online. The theme of the conference is "Physics learning for promoting culture and addressing societal issues". To the GIREP-EPEC 2023 Conference page, Košice, Slovakia (3-7 July 2023): Home page all the details are presented. I ask you to help in spreading the information, to send to the Conference a poster with the information you want to be disseminated and to honor GIREP participating in the opening ceremony in the form you deem most appropriate: in presence, online or with a message.
GIREP is paying more and more attention to a policy that brings quality research into its initiatives and at the same time favors the participation of teachers with research-based contributions. In this context it promotes the SARA BARBIERI Award for a work done by a teacher. On the page of the GIREP GIREP AWARDS-GIREP is published the call concerning a research activity conducted in a school class for at least 12 hours during the last 2 years. I take this opportunity to remind you that the Deadline for the submission was February 28. The evaluation period is March by a Commission of experts by means of a Rubric prepared by GIREP Board and decision will be announced on April 15 in order to invite those who win the prize of € 1000.00 to the GIREP_EPEC Congress in July 2023. "Physics in an Astronomy Context" Mini Workshop Series
The AAPT team of the NASA Heliophysics Education Activation Team (HEAT) will be offering a series of short 1.5-hour workshops one Saturday each month from February through June 2023. These workshops are directed to all physics teachers (middle school, high school, two-year college, and university), and will focus on lesson ideas and digital resource packages (AAPT Digi Kits) that help teach physics topics in an astronomy context. Engineering for US All (e4usa)
Engineering for US All (e4usa) aims to increase national access to engineering by providing a free high school engineering curriculum. This course can be taught by any high school teacher to any high school student who has completed Algebra I. Teachers are supported by participating in professional learning activities in the summer and throughout the academic year. The cost for schools that apply by April 1 is $1,400. This covers the cost of summer professional development and a one-year membership in the e4usa professional learning community. Additional information about the yearlong e4usa professional learning can be found here.

Beamline for Schools Competition
BL4S is a physics competition that invites teams of high-school students from all around the world to conceive an experiment that can be performed at the test beam facility of a particle accelerator. In 2023,the winners will be three, two teams will perform their experiments at CERN and one at DESY. There will be additional prizes for a selection of teams (up to 30). All the perspective participants who register will have the possibility to follow on-line events and virtual visits of CERN and DESY in preparation for the submission of their proposal. All the information can be found in the official invitation . The deadline to send a proposal is fixed to April 12, 2023.
Arizona State University Master of Natural Science Degree for High School Teachers
Arizona State University has an interdisciplinary Master of Natural Science (MNS) degree in physics for high school and TYC teachers. Courses are in summer, and the degree is founded on Modeling Instruction. Teachers in 15 western states can apply for 150% of resident graduate tuition; the deadline is APRIL 1.

Medical physics website available as resource for physics educators
The American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), an affiliated organization with AAPT, just completed a large-scale effort to launch a public education website. Medical physics is a field that uses concepts in physics to address questions in medicine. Medical physicists work in research, education, and clinical capacities in medical imaging, radiation therapy, and health physics. Physics students who want to learn how an MRI scanner works, read about how radiation affects cells, or just want to learn about a career in applied physics will enjoy this website, which includes an active "Ask the Expert" platform. https://www.medicalradiationinfo.org/.
The American Modeling Teachers Association
The American Modeling Teachers Association has been transforming STEM education since 2005. AMTA provides professional development on an instructional strategy called, Modeling Instruction, which builds conceptual understanding, improves classroom discourse, and engages students in the learning process. AMTA will soon announce our slate of virtual and face-to-face courses for 2023! Hosts are also beginning to schedule Modeling Workshops in different regions across the country. Find resources for teaching physics for life sciences students on the Living Physics Portal
The Living Physics Portal is an online environment for physics educators to find, share, and discuss free teaching materials for introductory physics for life sciences (IPLS). The objective of the Portal is to improve the education of the next generation of medical professionals and biologists by making physics classes more relevant for life sciences students. The Portal is available for free to all verified educators.
Features available on the Portal are:
• Anyone can view and download over 200 resources in our Vetted Library.
• Registered users can also view and download over 100 resources in our Community Library, along with answer keys and other instructor supplements, and join discussions about resources.
• Registered users can contribute curricular resources and instructor resources to our Community Library and Vetted Library, including adaptations of others' resources, and join our discussions. We accept all kinds of resources at all grain sizes, from a single activity to materials for a whole course. We encourage you to start by submitting a small activity to our Community Library. Once you get the hang of that, we invite you to contribute your polished materials to our Vetted Library to be reviewed by our editors.

Career Toolbox for Undergraduates
The Careers Toolbox for Undergraduate Physics Students is a set of tools and exercises designed to help undergraduate physics students prepare to enter the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics workforce.
