The Physics Teacher
October 2024
Volume 62 Issue 7
This Month's cover is a colorful representation of a phase diagram for nuclear matter. Everyday states of matter such as gases, liquids, and solids reside in the lower left of this figure. As the temperature and density are increased, not only are atoms broken down, but the protons and neutrons of the nucleus melt into an exotic mix known as a quark/gluon plasma. For details, see the article on page 550 by Don Lincoln, “Quark/Gluon Plasma: When Protons Melt.” Figure credit: Brookhaven National Laboratory.
