+ July 25 from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Visit the two largest neutrino detectors and dark matter experiment in North America. These three important physics experiments are just a bus ride away from the campus of the University of Minnesota. The tour starts with a bus ride to Northern Minnesota to the borders of Voyageurs National Park. The first stop is the Soudan Underground State Park located 1 km below the surface in an iron mine in the ancient Mesabi Mountain Range. At Soudan, you will see the 5.5 kiloton MINOS neutrino experiment and the Cryogenic Dark Matter experiment. Staff from these projects will describe the experiments and underlying physics and answer questions. While you are underground, you will also take a train through the mine to the large cavern where iron was last extracted before the site became a state park. This part of the tour will show how iron was historically mined and introduce you to the geology. After spending time exploring neutrino experiments, dark matter searches, and the mine itself, the bus trip will continue to the site of the newest generation of neutrino experiments, the 14 kiloton NOVA experiment. This new experiment is taking its initial data and will have just been completed for the visit. Physics staff will describe this experiment and its physics goals. The experiment is housed in a laboratory that is a 5 story building with the top story on ground level. At the end of this tour, the bus will take you back to campus. Both the Soudan Underground Laboratory and the NOVA Far Detector Laboratory are operated by the University of Minnesota with support from the U.S. Department of Energy. Tickets for this event must be purchased by Monday, June 30, 2014. Tickets will not be sold on-site. Cost of trip includes transportation, box lunch and box dinner. |

+ Zooniverse in the Classroom.... July 30 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. In the past ten years, there has been an explosion of internet-based citizen science research in astronomy (and other disciplines). Over a million people have contributed to scientific research through the Zooinverse.org projects. Participants in Galaxy Zoo, Hubble Zoo, Planethunters and more have been so active that the educators and scientists needed to develop new ways for participants to explore beyond the focus of any one project. The result is an entire suite of new web-based tools designed to assist citizen scientists in exploring vast quantities of astronomical data on their own. This event will first demonstrate several of these tools in the context of data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and Galaxy Zoo. You will learn how to use the tools to create a color-magnitude diagram and see some examples of how these tools have been used in undergraduate classes. We will then break-out into smaller groups and through guided exploration of the data, brainstorm possible curricular units for use in your classroom. The tutorial will finish with groups sharing what they have developed. This event will be held on University of Minnesota's campus in the STSS building. |
