Laura H. Greene to Receive AAPT 2024 Oersted Medal
Laura H. Greene has been named as the 2024 recipient of the prestigious Hans Christian Oersted Medal, presented by the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT). The Medal will be awarded at a Ceremonial Session of the AAPT Winter Meeting where she will also deliver a plenary lecture. The Oersted Medal recognizes her outstanding, widespread, and lasting impact on the teaching of physics.
Greene is Chief Scientist at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory and the Marie Krafft Professor of Physics at Florida State University. She was previously the Swanlund and the Center for Advanced Study Professor of Physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her undergraduate studies were at The Ohio State University, and after receiving her PhD at Cornell University, she was a post doc at Bell Labs then a member of staff at Bellcore. Read more

Award Winner's Giving Plenary Talks
The 2024 Richtmyer Awardee is Katie Mack , Dr. Mack is a theoretical astrophysicist who studies a range of questions in cosmology, the study of the universe from beginning to end. She currently holds the position of the Hawking Chair in Cosmology and Science Communication at the Perimeter Institute.
The 2024 Oersted Medal Winner is Laura H. Greene. Dr. Greene is Chief Scientist at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory and the Marie Krafft Professor of Physics at Florida State University.
Physics and Astronomy STEMM Equity Achievement (SEA) Change Departmental Program is recruiting for its third cohort!
Is your department interested in doing a deep dive to better understand itself regarding diversity and inclusion? Does your department want to do systemic change around diversity, equity, and inclusion but may not know where to start?
The Physics and Astronomy STEMM Equity Achievement (SEA) Change Departmental Program is recruiting for its third cohort! P/A SEA Change is a collaboration among many physics and astronomy professional societies, including AAPT, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Postsecondary education departments work through a comprehensive self-assessment regarding policies, practices, culture, climate, and outcomes. The self-assessment informs a 5-year action plan. Departments then apply for a Bronze award. If awarded, they will need to complete their 5-year plan. More information on the program is here.
We invite physics and astronomy postsecondary education departments in the United States (US) or US territories to apply to join cohort 3. Please apply for cohort 3 here by 22 November 2023. We plan on informing departments whether they are joining cohort 3 by the end of 2023.

Mike Florek and Saara Naudts Receive 2024 Barbara Wolff-Reichert Travel Grant
The first recipients of the Barbara Wolff-Reichert Travel Grant have been identifed. The award will be presented to Mike Florek (early career teacher) and Saara Nadts (more experienced teacher) by the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) at the AAPT 2024 Winter Meeting in New Orleans, LA. Call to Area Committees and List Serves - AAPT COMMUNITIES
If you chair an Area Committee and are interested in creating a group on COMMUNITIES, please get in touch with us. This may be the best way to create a "friends of the committee" group going forward. Using this method, the Chair could set the default delivery option for the group to Real-Time, which would most accurately mirror the current list serve model. These groups would be open for any AAPT member to join. We would like to start with a handful of these groups as a pilot program to see how it works. If you are interested, please reach out to Mike Hall (mhall@aapt.org).
For those who do not choose to create a dedicated group on COMMUNITIES, you can still use the platform to let AAPT members know about your activities by posting in the General Community. We encourage all AAPT members to visit the AAPT COMMUNITIES platform and follow the Tag for any committee that you are interested in. Likewise, we encourage Committee Chairs to use this tag when posting information relevant to your committee.

The mission of the U.S. Physics Team Program is to promote and demonstrate academic excellence through preparation for and participation in the International Physics Olympiad. "Physics in an Astronomy Context" Mini Workshop Series
The AAPT team of the NASA Heliophysics Education Activation Team (HEAT) will be offering a series of short 1.5-hour workshops one Saturday each month through December 2023. These workshops are directed to all physics teachers (high school, two-year college, and university), and will focus on lesson ideas and digital resource packages (AAPT Digi Kits) that help teach physics topics in an astronomy context. Early Career Four-Year College and University Faculty: Registration for the November 2-5, 2023 four-day National Science Foundation supported Physics and Astronomy Faculty Teaching Institute opened September 5. Part-Time Consultant Opportunity: Physics and Astronomy Faculty Teaching Institute, Apply by October 27
The Physics and Astronomy Faculty Teaching Institute (formerly known as the New Faculty Workshop), a National Science Foundation-funded project run by AAPT and APS, is in search of a part-time consultant to support our post-workshop engagement initiatives. Our FTI workshop is conducted twice a year and draws participants from a significant portion of new physics and astronomy faculty in colleges and universities across the United States. In this role, you will collaborate closely with our current post-workshop engagement team to provide valuable opportunities for workshop attendees to further explore and apply research-backed teaching methodologies after their workshop experience. Participants will be encouraged to become part of a growing community of physics educators dedicated to improving the physics curriculum through including computation as a standard problem solving method.

Journal of High School Discovery
The Journal of High School Discovery is a new outlet for young researchers to share their work. We are the only journal created and run by high school students to publish the work of other high school students. This is a project we started out of a strong passion for science and a desire to show the world the passion of other like minded students.
We are looking for physics teachers to help curate our articles. As a curator, you would assist us by reviewing submissions for accuracy and scientific value, shaping the future of the journal. In addition, we ask for your help in connecting us with passionate students who may be interested in publishing their work.

Summer Online Training to Integrate Computer Science Into Physics and Physical Science
Are you code curious? In partnership with AAPT, this summer Prof. Chris Orban will be leading a beginner and intermediate level online course for high school physics and physical science teachers on how to integrate computer science into these subjects in a way that strongly aligns with traditional physics learning goals. Back in 2017, Chris and others started the STEMcoding Project and began creating activities on the physics of video games. Participants have the option to purchase grad credit. The American Modeling Teachers Association
The American Modeling Teachers Association has been transforming STEM education since 2005. AMTA provides professional development on an instructional strategy called, Modeling Instruction, which builds conceptual understanding, improves classroom discourse, and engages students in the learning process. AMTA will soon announce our slate of virtual and face-to-face courses for 2023! Hosts are also beginning to schedule Modeling Workshops in different regions across the country. Congratulations to Joe Cossette for being named the 2023 PhysTEC National Teacher of the Year! Joe teaches at Minnetonka High School and was nominated by PhysTEC institution University of Minnesota. Arizona State University Master of Natural Science Degree for High School Teachers
Arizona State University has an interdisciplinary Master of Natural Science (MNS) degree in physics for high school and TYC teachers. Courses are in summer, and the degree is founded on Modeling Instruction. Teachers in 15 western states can apply for 150% of resident graduate tuition; the deadline is APRIL 1.

Medical physics website available as resource for physics educators
The American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), an affiliated organization with AAPT, just completed a large-scale effort to launch a public education website. Medical physics is a field that uses concepts in physics to address questions in medicine. Find Resources for Teaching Physics for Life Sciences Students on the Living Physics Portal
The Living Physics Portal is an online environment for physics educators to find, share, and discuss free teaching materials for introductory physics for life sciences (IPLS). The objective of the Portal is to improve the education of the next generation of medical professionals and biologists by making physics classes more relevant for life sciences students. The Portal is available for free to all verified educators.
Features available on the Portal are:
• Anyone can view and download over 200 resources in our Vetted Library.
• Registered users can also view and download over 100 resources in our Community Library, along with answer keys and other instructor supplements, and join discussions about resources.
• Registered users can contribute curricular resources and instructor resources to our Community Library and Vetted Library, including adaptations of others' resources, and join our discussions. We accept all kinds of resources at all grain sizes, from a single activity to materials for a whole course. We encourage you to start by submitting a small activity to our Community Library. Once you get the hang of that, we invite you to contribute your polished materials to our Vetted Library to be reviewed by our editors.
